Zakee "The Barber" Chief Squad Productions

At the age of 13, Zakee started dj’ing local basement and backyard parties as a hobby, which quickly developed into a steady weekend gig. Dj’ing parties from Cleveland to Kent State University, his popularity grew, as did his interest in making the music instead of just spinning it. He eventually started making "pause button beat-tapes and mixtapes" with his then "EBONY CHIEFS" partner Farid Giovanni a.k.a. "the Stressa", using his collection of what, was then, a few hundred albums, that landed them a deal with local record label Platinum Music Group. He eventually purchased a MPC2000 beat machine in 1995 and began sampling from his collection of more than 2000 albums to make beats for many Cleveland Hip-Hop names (PEAZI DEBIASI, THE ELEMENTS, and JAHI just to name a few). In 1998 he founded a Hip-Hop group called "CHIEFSQUAD" and produced an album entitled "THE INSTINCT" which to this day is still considered a Cleveland Hip-Hop Classic. His soulful, sample based, beat making skills along with his ability to lay down rhythmic scratches over them became a sound sought after by many Cleveland artists from Hip-Hop to R&B. Zakee a.k.a. "the barber" (a name which represents one of his many other talents) has grown into a complete producer, able to take a project from start to completion, able to both produce and engineer his sessions. As an engineer, Zakee has developed an ear for recording and mixing that has afforded him the opportunity to work with some very reputable names in the industry, he is also receiving praises for his scoring and sound FX work on both short and feature films. He now owns CHIEFSQUADPRODUCTIONS LLC.(a production company that has worked with the likes of Universal recording artists "A.T." to up and coming rap icon TRUTH) Zakee represents a producer/engineer who understands quality and creativity and the fusion of the two. His production style ranges from melodic, keyboard driven soulful tracks to banging sample chopped Hip-Hop beats and everything in between. Today, Zakee’s beat production is achieved using everything from softsynths to live instrumentation, but the centerpieces of his production is his Roland MV8800, Motif XS Rack, his Moog Little Phatty 2 and his collection of

Cleveland Classic!
You really can't do too many posts on a site about Cleveland without giving it up to our greatest Hip-Hop group ever. Brothers 4 The Struggle. Real live D-Boys that got the bright idea in 1989 to rap about doing what they do. The first MCs to deliberately talk about selling crack. Johnny Paycheck and Pratt Attack had tremendous skills on the mic. Their DJ/producer, Mixmaster Quik used to be in Ice T's Rhyme Syndicate along with fellow Cleveland OG, Bango the B-Boy Outlaw (more on these guys later, a little at a time), in the late 80 and early 90s. The level of production on this album is incredible. They were on the same label that the Deep Cover soundtrack was released on (Solar), but for whatever reason, they never blew up nationwide. However, here in Cleveland, they were the shit and ran the city. This album is a classic like the Ghetto Boys' Grip It! On That Other Level and NWA's Straight Outta Compton. The only catch is that only really certain Clevelanders and a few excellent record diggers in the Midwest region may know who they are. They young generation coming up now has at most, merely heard of them.
